On a side note I have noticed that the 60csx seems to get better accuracy then a 60cx. I just use the lanyard and attach it to the cockpit bungies with my camera.

I got it for my work, but it is also useful for hiking, kayaking, geocaching, etc. I had a PN-20, then a PN-40, now have a PN-60 with SPOT receiver combo. Can connect with an optional accompanying SPOT unit which enables you to send emergency messages as well as texts to pre-selected phone numbers (like 'Got to campsite, all is well' or 'Have flat tire, will be late getting back' and the like) and you can send your tracks to a password-protected website so your friend/Mom/etc. Can load aerial photographs as well as maps and charts (I find the aerials easier to navigate with - show more detail than maps, but being a geologist I'm used to working with them)ģ. It's a very similar unit to the 60cx that Camshaft uses, with the additional benefits of floating and having tide tables. The cheapest unit I know of that has all the useful features and none of the useless one is the Garmin GPSMap 76cx that Andy Ferguson and Camshaft recommend. What I don't need in a GPS are things like bluetooth data-sharing, 3G connectivity, touchscreen, digital camera, 3 dimensional terrain views, satellite imagery downloads, barometric altimeter, 3-axis compass, turn-by-turn road navigation, text-to-speech, etc, etc, etc! The Garmin ones can be off by about half an hour or so, but they are good enough for planning purposes.

A nautical chart would tell me water depth and anchorage locations, but that stuff doesn't matter for kayaking. I use topographic maps rather than nautical charts for kayak navigation, the reason being that with a topo map, I can identify likely campsite locations and fresh water sources, as well as day hike opportunities.
